Birding in Northwest Connecticut
Springtime in the foothills of the Berkshires promises to be a birder's paradise. We will focus on late migrants and the breeding birds of the area including Hooded and Cerulean Warblers. Field trips include visits to the Housatonic State Forest and Audubon's Miles Wildlife Sanctuary (a 6,000-acre block of unfragmented forest), the Sharon Audubon Center featuring a bird banding station and wildlife rehabilitation clinic and Kent River Road along the Housatonic River and Appalachian Trail. Other potential field trips include White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield Connecticut and other hotspots depending on where birds are being seen. Also included will be a night trip to search for owls, bitterns and rails and an optional birding by canoe trip on a peaceful part of the beautiful Housatonic River. Appropriate for beginning and advanced birders alike, Audubon naturalists will provide illuminating instruction on the identification of North American birds by sight, sound and behavior, and instruct on the conservation issues affecting native bird populations. Build your birding skills and experience the springtime beauty of the waterfalls, hills and forests of northwestern Connecticut and beyond!
